Developing Athletes of Character

DSC_0130Last week RCS Head Basketball Coach, Drew Edgerly, and RCS parent Jason Morgan instructed a 3-day basketball camp for boys and girls in 2nd-8th grade. However, this camp had a much bigger scope than the game of basketball. Coach Edgerly and Morgan, set out to design this camp around training our students to improve not only their basketball skills, but more importantly, the values and metal edge needed to succeed in basketball and every other endeavor. The motto, “Be Incredible,” was used throughout the camp to inspire each student to be a light in this world. Matthew 5:16 “We taught them that they must submit to God’s will in their lives and “being incredible” does not always equate to fame and fortune,” Coach Edgerly explained.

Campers spent their three days learning fundamental skills of the game as well as the necessary attitude to be a “complete” basketball player. Each player received one-on-one attention by the coaches and improved their skills through DSC_0147repetitions of ball-handling, jump stops, dribbling moves, passing techniques, the nine keys of shooting, defensive slides and defensive positioning.

On the final day of camp, Coach Morgan shared this Nike commercial about Greatness. “There are times in athletics, school, and life where things are challenging.  For some campers it was the ball handling drills, for others it might be shooting a ball up to a 10 foot basket.  Everyday we get an opportunity to work on being a better version of YOU today than you were yesterday.  Jesus was asked a similar question about Greatness.  He was asked, “Who, then is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”  Jesus said in Matthew 18:4, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”  Jesus knew that the type of people he wanted in heaven were like children—ones willing to humble themselves at something challenging like ball handling drills and shooting a ball at a 10 foot basket.” – Coach Morgan

The product of training “complete athletes” came to fruition on the final day of camp as the students held a change drive for the Emmans Family. In total the kids raised $188.00. The older kids raised the most money and got to pie Coach Edgerly. Yet another story of the heart of RCS kids!FullSizeRender
