Riverside Christian School of Yakima came away with 3rd place from a field of 12 teams at the State 1B division tournament. This was the fourth time Riverside Christian has earned a 3rd place Knowledge Bowl trophy at state, having achieved the same position in 2015, 2008 and 2007. This year’s award was also the 12th state trophy for the school, which has advanced to State for all 13 years that the Knowledge Bowl program has been made available to south central Washington’s schools. (Riverside Christian missed out on a state placement only in 2013.) At the end of the morning’s preliminary portion, Riverside Christian was in 4th place overall, scoring 29 points in the written round (behind Lacey’s Pope John Paul II High School with 39, Poulsbo’s West Sound Academy with 34, and Wilbur with 30). In the preliminary’s four oral rounds, Riverside Christian collected the 51 points, behind only Pope John Paul II (76) and Wilbur (63). Riverside Christian then defeated West Sound Academy in the semifinal oral round, 18-14, to advance into the championship bracket. At the championship oral round, Wilber won the title by scoring 12 points, Pope John Paul II came in second with 10, and Riverside Christian earned its third-place award with 8 points. Members of the Riverside Christian team at state this year under faculty coach Mike Emmans were Seth Baxter, EmilyBoothman, Coby Boyd, Lydia Calhoun, Sarah Gray, Jessie Stucker.
