RCS 5th Graders Take Over A City!

RCS 5th Graders Take Over A City!

DSC_3092Last week RCS 5th graders had the exciting opportunity to participate in Junior Achievement’s Biztown. As a part of this program, our students, along with students from McKinely Elementary, worked together to run a city! Students were given the task of being consumers as well as various employees at businesses inside the mock community of Biztown.

JA Biztown is a local center that hosts a mini city with public and private businesses sponsored by real local Yakima businesses! It’s quite an impressive facility where the businesses are smaller scale replicas complete with authentic logos.

Here is a list of the business present at Yakima’s JA Biztown:

AB Washington BeefDSC_3035
Advanced Digital Imaging
Allstate Insurance
BNI
Central Washington University
Fiesta Foods
Larson Berg & Associates
McDonald’s
Pacific Power
Seattle Mariners
Solarity Credit Union
Tree Top
Yakima Herald
Yakima Regional Medical

Learning how to run a business and be consumers is not an easy task, and our 5th graders put in a lot of hard work before the big day. Each student completed classroom curriculum where they learned basic economic principles. They learned business concepts like consumerism and real-life skills like how to manage a personal bank account. Students participated in job interviews and were assigned to various roles that included retail sales professionals, accountants, business managers, medical professionals to TV and newspaper reporters. One lucky kid even got elected Mayor!

DSC_3083DSC_3076RCS students did a great job and took home two awards!  Joel Johnston was awarded the Quality Business Award for the work done by students at Solarity Credit Union and Sadie Melhorn was given the Citizen Of The Day Award! Way to go 5th graders!
