K9 Guests of Honor: Dexter and Covah

K9 Guests of Honor: Dexter and Covah

What an exciting day for our elementary students. Leadership Yakima is working to raise awareness for the Yakima Police Department K9 unit. They would like to help them fund a new narcotics K9 and provide the special training required. The dogs alone are generally $10,000 and the department is operating at half its capacity. They came to Riverside to promote their cause and to introduce these amazing and talented dogs.

Riverside welcomed Office Walters who brought his partner, Dexter. Dexter is bilingual, taking his commands in both English and German. Officer McKinney brought his partner, Covah, who is also bilingual, taking commands in both English and Czech.

Dexter was so energetic and fun. I think he would have held onto that toy all day. Covah is a talker. He did not stop “talking” the entire time he was on stage, including when he searched for the hidden item. By the way, he had no problem finding it.

What a privilege it was to meet these officers and their dogs. The kids asked great questions, made amazing thank you cards, and loved every minute of it. We hope they are able to add a new K9 to their team.
